Should I disclose my disability when applying for a job

Whether to disclose your disability or not is a dilemma that many people still have to consider.  From a legal perspective, you are obliged to disclose any material facts when specifically asked by the employer. Not disclosing a disability could mean you may not be entitled to the protection by the Disability Discrimination Act, specifically as it relates to 'resonable adjustments'.

It may help you to explore the company's policies as it relates to equality and diversity. Larger organisations will publish these on their website and/or include it with the application pack.

Many employees fear that revealing their disability, especially when it relates to an experience of mental distress may create unhelpful preconceptions and prejudice in colleagues and managers at work. With hindsight, their advice is that is may be better to see what your managers and colleagues views are like before disclosing information about your health.
